Pionnier de la photographie au Japon, Ogawa s'est fait connaître
pour la qualité de ses photographies artistiques et par ses planches au
collotype. Son père fût un samourai du clan Matsudaira .Il apprit l'anglais à
l'âge de 15 ans et partit aux USA pour étudier la photographie ( Boston ,
Philadelphie ) de 1882 à 1884 . De retour au Japon, il crée son studio
photographique et commence des activités d'imprimerie. En 1891 il est chargé de
faire le portrait des 100 plus célèbres geishas de Tokyo ce qui lui donne une
certaine notoriété. De 1889 à 1894, Ogawa édita le seul journal consacré à la
photographie. Ogawa produit de très nombreux albums au collotype pendant
l'époque Meiji mais aussi Taisho. Ogawa fût l'un des membres fondateurs de la "Japan
Photographic Society" mais aussi le seul membre de la fameuse "Royal
Photographic Society" en Angleterre . Ses albums sont plus rares que ceux de
Kimbei ( Beato , Stillfired ).
He is one of the masters of early photography in Japan. He is
famous for his artistic photographs and collotype albums. His father was a
samurai from the Matsudaira clan. He studied English when he was 15 years old
and went to US to study photography in Boston and Philadelphia. Once back in
Japan, he created his own studio and started a printing company to produce
collotype albums. By 1889 he was choosen to photograph the most famous geishas
of Tôkyô. He became famous after these shots. From 1889 to 1894, Ogawa
published the only journal about photography. He is one of the
photographers who founded the "Japan Photographic Society" and the first
Japanese photographer to become a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
